I am so proud of my students! They are doing great with their watercolors, each person has their own unique style and vision. I love being able to give them the same photo to paint from and then see how each one turns out differently. I try to let them have free reign as far as adding different colors than what they see… and boy, it is just awesome. They are also really getting used to painting on the Aquabord, too. I have many new paper to aquabord converts now . It really isn’t about ‘choosing’ or having to choose specifically the ground you paint on or ‘you won’t be in the cool group’, it is a preference. I have had students say they still like 300 lb cold pressed arches paper and still like aquabord, equally. I suppose it depends on what they are painting, how they want the paint to move on the surface and their expectations of it. I just bought a piece of aquabord that is HUGEEEE… 24 x 30″ (I think that’s right). I have no idea what to paint on it, it looms at me in the studio, begging for a subject to be used for. I am thinking maybe horses… flowing manes and tails… lots of color, lots of movement. Yes. I think that is what I will do.

Anyway, (sorry, got off on a tangent there)… here is the photo of my students painting their little pears. Next week, we paint Irises! Beautiful flowers from a beautiful place: The Biltmore in Asheville. (I would move in there if I could… I can dream.) I have a few spots left open if you are interested in joining us! Yet another Ball Jar… yeah I know… but it’s FUN!

This ball jar painting was used as a demo for my watercolor students. Learning how to paint reflections in glass, using many different colors to make it as realistic as possible… it was a challenging class for them, but they ALL DID FABULOUSLY! Even my 12 year old student, she rocked it . I finished up this painting and listed it for auction up on Ebay. It has been a while since I have been on ebay, but I thought I would give it a try again. Many of my famous artist friends still use that platform to sell, I used it back in 2005- 06 and sold lots of pastels. Who knows what will happen now…

So, in my watercolor class I am teaching (this is aside from the class I teach on Thursdays), my students are painting portraits on Ampersand Aquabord using mostly Daniel Smith watercolors. This class has been asking for this subject to be taught, as I am just taking over this month for MY watercolor teacher, Pat Underwood. (she is happily eating green chili and painting in the glorious mountains in Ghost Ranch. Lucky.) Anyway, this is the portrait I am using as a demo. Still lots to do, but thought I would post a progress shot of her. I think this will be a good class, all the students picked great photos to paint! Each with different skin tones.

A huge success!

Panoply was a HUGE success! I sold over half my inventory, which was great! The collages seemed to be the big hit this year as they flew off the walls. I sold 5 watercolors as well! Also traded with another fantastic artist, Amanda Bennett, who has an affinity for old rustic neon retro signs like me . (I love trading art!) It was a great weekend despite the heat. Luckily, I got into a new and fabulous gallery in Huntsville, too! They loved my work!

While I was sitting in my booth, I got some painting done. I started working on a Jellyfish watercolor, one that my son, Maarten, wanted me to paint for him. I took the shot at the Chattanooga Aquarium, the only one out of about 22 pictures that wasn’t blurry! I got a good head start on it! This is 12 x 16″ using Daniel Smith watercolors done on my favorite surface, Ampersand Aquabord. Will be finishing it up this week and I will post a final shot for you all.

I am now on day 3 of Panoply and so far so good! These photos were taken before the event began, and I am happy to report, there are lots of bare spots on the display walls now! Moreso of the collages, which people just LOVE than the watercolors, tho I did sell a few of those, too. I am hoping today will be as busy as yesterday and I get to meet more awesome people who love art as much as I do . Still a few collages left, lots of handmade collaged jewelry and watercolors! Come on out and see me! I am painting a jellyfish today as my demo, if you are curious as to what my process is, now is a good time to watch.

Well, I got MOST of my framing done tonight! Just a few more 5 x 7″ watercolors to go, and then I am all set! This is just a fraction of what I am bringing to the show, a FRACTION! I still have many more including aceo’s and 4 x 4″ wc’s, and larger ones! PLUS, the other half of my tent will be pattern collages! They are so beautiful, my son Jake came down and saw the BIG one and said, “Mom, do NOT sell that one! I really like it, it needs to stay here.” Well, I am taking it anyway, I agree with him 100%, but I think if it was meant for someone, it will find a home. Here is my disheveled table (with my trusty dal Molly peering over it) filled with framed works. And the other pic is the large pattern collage that will be in the show. It’s (I think) 30″ x 40″. big.
